Newcastle JMP: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

The Joint Medical Program (JMP), University of Newcastle and University of New England, does not call its circuit an MMI in current applicant language. It calls it a Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA). AskUON, updated March 2026, says MSA was previously known as Multi-Mini Interview: you rotate through stations, discuss scenarios, and may undertake activities.

That is an MMI-shaped exam with a local name. Prepare for a circuit, not a UNSW-style panel. Then read the live JMP pages, because the delivery has moved before (including a Zoom version in an earlier cycle).

Format, as currently published

The JMP personal-qualities page describes the MSA as eight, eight-minute rotating stations. At each station you discuss scenarios and undertake activities with the assessor.

AskUON is less specific on station count: "a circuit several stations." If those two pages ever disagree, the page dated for your intake and your invitation win. We are not going to average them into a fake "10 stations" from a third-party blog.

You indicate a preferred MSA location on the direct application: University of Newcastle (Callaghan) or University of New England (Armidale). JMP says it will try to match that preference but does not guarantee it. Where you sit the MSA does not determine where you enrol. Assessments are not run at alternative locations or outside the set periods.

Photo ID is required, as with UCAT ANZ. If you do not attend without adequate written explanation, JMP treats the application as withdrawn.

The JMP Assessment has more than the MSA. The personal-qualities page describes a Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA) as part of the same selection process. Confirm the current PQA instructions on that page; do not borrow an old applicant PDF.

What this is not

It is not a single long conversation. What an MMI is is the right mental model, with JMP's own station count and name. It is not automatically online. A 2024 applicant page described a six-station Zoom MSA. The live personal-qualities page describes rotating stations at Callaghan or Armidale. Check this year's invite. Do not freeze either version.

Dates: pattern, not a frozen calendar

AskUON (updated March 2026) describes the pattern, not a day-by-day 2027 timetable:

• Applicants who score at the required level in UCAT ANZ are invited to MSA.
• Eligible applicants from NSW, ACT, QLD, and all eligible rural applicants, are invited in November/December.
• Non-rural interstate applicants (TAS, VIC, SA, NT, WA) identified as eligible are invited to a January MSA session.
• All applicants are advised by mid-November whether they have progressed to MSA.
• MSAs are not held outside the set periods. Holiday plans are not extenuating circumstances. Change-of-period requests go to jmpadmissions@newcastle.edu.au and are not guaranteed.

The personal-qualities page has, in recent cycles, listed "late November to early December" for the first group and "mid January" for the second, with year-stamps that roll. Do not copy a 2025 date into a 2026 application. Open the JMP site for the intake you want.

How they select, as published

Invitations to JMP Assessment are based on UCAT ANZ. The personal-qualities page states that JMP calculates an aggregate from Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making and Quantitative Reasoning. That aggregate ranks applicants for invitation. For admission in 2026, the same page said Situational Judgement will not form part of the JMP selection process. Confirm that sentence on the current page for 2027 entry. There is no Abstract Reasoning subtest in UCAT ANZ.

We are not publishing a UCAT cut-off. JMP does not put a reusable number on those pages for you to treat as next year's bar.

What they actually assess

JMP's published MSA language is qualities including capacity to thrive in the JMP learning environment, decision-making under uncertainty, interpersonal and communication skills, and motivation to be a doctor. Older applicant guides used similar clusters. Use the live page, not a 2020 PDF.

NSW rural health, Closing the Gap, Medicare access, and AHPRA's Good Medical Practice are the right frame. Not the GMC. Not an NHS essay. JMP is a joint Newcastle/New England program with a rural footprint: "I'll do a rural term" needs more than a weekend narrative.

Ethics, why medicine, and role-play are reasonable practice vehicles if the station is a discussion or an activity. JMP says you may undertake activities, not only talk. Practise starting a task, not only a speech.

How to prepare for this circuit

Practise eight spoken stations of about eight minutes, back to back, with a walk in between. If your invite is Zoom, switch using virtual versus in-person. If it is Callaghan or Armidale, plan travel; JMP will not run a private sitting for your flight.

After UCAT, the Sep-Dec timeline fits the November/December group. Interstate non-rural applicants should not disappear in December: January is still live.

Proof of identity on the day is not a formality. JMP's personal-qualities page treats photo ID the way UCAT ANZ does: if you cannot produce it, you do not sit. Bring what the invite names, not a folder of certificates.

If you are comparing JMP with Monash's six Zoom stations or Adelaide's ten-minute Zoom MMI, do not average the clocks. Eight minutes at Callaghan is not ten minutes on Adelaide time, and JMP's PQA is an extra piece those circuits do not share.
