Monash: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

Monash direct-entry medicine uses a Multiple Mini Interview. That part has been stable. The details that actually matter, station count, Zoom, December versus January ranking, and the Indigenous panel exception, come from Monash's own pages, not from a 2017 campus walk-through.

Read the current entry requirements and applications and fees pages for your intake. Dates on the applications page were last updated in late August 2026 when we checked. They can still move.

Format, as Monash currently describes it

Monash uses a Multi Mini Interview of six sequential stations. At each station you have two minutes of reading time with a scenario, then eight minutes of interview (ten minutes per station). The circuit takes about 70 to 80 minutes including pre-brief and debrief.

Applicants are invited by email and log in to an online system to self-allocate a time. Once the system closes, changes are not permitted and late requests are not accommodated.

The MMI is conducted online via Zoom. Do not assume Clayton lecture theatres from an older cycle.

Monash lists the stations as focusing on:

• advocacy
• collaboration
• critical thinking
• empathy
• ethical reasoning
• motivation and resilience

That is a competency list, not a promise of one station per word. You may get five questions on a single scenario. Follow-ups are part of the eight minutes.

You may sit the MMI for this course once. Re-applicants who have already attended the MMI for this course are not eligible to re-sit it. Confirm that rule on the current entry-requirements page if you are applying again.

What this is not

It is not a panel. It is not UNSW. What an MMI is and MMI versus panel are the format pages; this page is Monash's version.

Indigenous Australian applicants are not in this circuit. Monash states they are exempt from competitive ranking and instead complete a panel interview with an all-Indigenous panel (academics, student engagement staff, and a community member). That panel replaces both the MMI and UCAT ANZ. If that is your pathway, do not prepare six Zoom stations as your only mock.

Dates for 2027 entry

From Monash's applications and fees page. Hashes on that page mean dates are subject to change.

• 3 March to 15 May 2026: UCAT ANZ registration.
• 1 July to 5 August 2026: UCAT ANZ test period.
• 3 August to 28 September 2026: VTAC timely applications (close 5pm Monday 28 September 2026, Melbourne time). You must have at least one Medicine VTAC code on your preferences at that close. You cannot add Monash Medicine later.
• 1 to 9 October 2026: Dean's Rural List (DRL) application window (closes 12pm Friday 9 October).
• 1 & 2 December 2026: first-round DRL interviews on Zoom. Selection for this round is UCAT ANZ total score only. Invitations: afternoon of Monday 12 October 2026.
• 8 & 9 December 2026: first-round Victorian-based applicants (not on the DRL) on Zoom. UCAT ANZ total only. Invitations: afternoon of Wednesday 14 October 2026. "Victorian-based" is the residential address on your VTAC application at timely close.
• 5 & 6 January 2027: second-round interviews on Zoom for Victorian-based applicants and DRL applicants anywhere. Selection is an equally weighted ATAR aggregate (including adjustments) and UCAT ANZ total. Invitations: Saturday 19 December 2026.
• 18 & 19 January 2027: third-round interviews on Zoom for Year 12 completed interstate or overseas. Same ATAR + UCAT combination. Invitations: afternoon of Friday 15 January 2027.

January Round 1 VTAC offers are mid-January 2027. All applicants are considered regardless of which MMI they sat. February rounds only backfill withdrawals.

Monash publishes previous UCAT cut-off information on the entry-requirements page. We are not going to reprint a number here that will be wrong next year. Look at Monash's own "previous cut-off scores" link, then treat this year's distribution as new.

How the three components combine

Selection for offers uses three equally weighted components:

1. ATAR aggregate, including equity-scheme adjustments (formerly SEAS). 2. UCAT ANZ total score. 3. MMI performance.

That is one-third each. Clearing the December UCAT bar gets you into a Zoom room. It does not lock an offer. ATAR still lands in the mix once results exist.

December interview selection ignores ATAR on purpose, so Victorian and DRL applicants can sit before results. January selection puts ATAR back in. Interstate school leavers wait for January.

UCAT ANZ has four sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement. There is no Abstract Reasoning. Monash's published language is "UCAT ANZ total score." Confirm on the current page whether that total includes SJT for your cycle; do not guess from a forum.

What they actually assess, in practice

Six stations, two minutes to read, eight minutes to talk. Use the reading time to name the task, not to draft a speech. Ethical stations will show up as reasoning, not as a principle shopping list. AHPRA's Good Medical Practice, not the GMC.

Victorian health context is fair game: Medicare access, bulk-billing pressure, Closing the Gap, rural workforce (Monash has an Extended Rural Cohort and a Dean's Rural List: "I'll go rural" needs more than a weekend in Daylesford). Voluntary assisted dying is lawful in Victoria under statute. Know that it is regulated, not a vibe.

Motivation and resilience are named competencies. Why medicine should be specific and ready for "what would make you leave." Collaboration is named too: how you disagree, not how nicely you phrase it.

How to prepare for this circuit

Practise six stations back to back on Zoom, with a two-minute silent read and an eight-minute speak. Time the changeover. A single beautiful station in a quiet kitchen is not the exam.

After UCAT, the Sep to Dec timeline is the calendar. If you are Victorian or DRL, your invite can arrive in October for an early December circuit, before ATAR. Do not wait for results to start speaking.
