UNSW: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

UNSW Medicine does not run an MMI for domestic entry. If you are drilling eight-minute stations because "everyone does MMI," you are preparing for the wrong exam.

The university's own domestic applicants page describes a structured interview with two interviewers drawn from academic staff, medical practitioners, or community representatives. Topics are wide-ranging and relevant. Your Medicine Application Form is shared with the interviewers before you sit down. That is a panel-shaped conversation, not a circuit.

Formats change. Read the current UNSW Medicine domestic applicants page for your intake. Do not freeze a 2019 student blog or a Reddit table.

Format, in the university's words

• Structured interview, two interviewers.
• Face-to-face. UNSW states there is no online option for domestic applicants.
• General, Gateway, and Lateral Entry interviews are on the Kensington campus.
• Rural Entry Admission Pathway (REAP) interviews are face-to-face at the closest Rural Clinical Campus to your home address: Wagga Wagga, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, or Albury.
• Photo ID is required. Certificates and award folders are not.
• Once you enter the room you are deemed fit to be interviewed. Rescheduling is not a right; if you are unwell beforehand, contact the Student Experience Team (or Rural Support Team for REAP) immediately.
• If you believe selection procedures were applied improperly, you must email mh.admissions@unsw.edu.au within 24 hours.

UNSW does not publish a minute-by-minute running order on that page. Third-party sites often guess a duration. Treat those guesses as unverified. Prepare for one sustained conversation, not a bell every eight minutes.

What this is not

It is not an MMI. There is no rotation, no independent scorer per room, no 30-second door stem as the default design. Prep that assumes recovery by walking to the next station will leave you exposed when the same two people stay with a weak answer.

MMI versus panel is the switch. Practise depth: one story they can pull apart, not six openings.

Dates for the 2027 intake (published 2026)

From UNSW's important dates for domestic applicants. Dates move; confirm on the same page.

• 23 to 27 November 2026: REAP interview round, face-to-face.
• 1 December 2026: interview invitations to Lateral Entry Scheme applicants.
• 14 December 2026: Lateral Entry interview day.
• 16 December 2026: ATARs released; interview invitations to applicants whose high school and/or tertiary results have been finalised.
• 17 to 22 December 2026: December interview round (non-rural, non-lateral), face-to-face.
• 7 January 2027: invitations to applicants whose results were finalised late.
• 12 to 13 January 2027: January interview round (non-rural, non-lateral).
• 18 January 2027: final interview round for NZ applicants with late results only.
• 8 January 2027: UAC January Round 1 offers.
• Results released after Wednesday 13 January 2027 cannot be considered for the 2027 intake.

Interstate and NZ domestic applicants are not given a Zoom alternative. If results are finalised in time, you are in the December round regardless of where you live.

How they choose who sits, and who gets an offer

Interview selection (General and Gateway): combined ranking of academic selection rank and UCAT ANZ overall score. Results are not averaged; you need to be high enough on both. UNSW states there are approximately 350 interview places for general entry, approximately 60 for Gateway, and approximately 30 for Lateral Entry.

REAP: invitation is based on meeting the UCAT ANZ cut-off and rural eligibility. Academic results are reviewed after ATAR release. Living rurally outside Australia does not count. Rurality uses Modified Monash Model MMM 2 to 7 for at least five consecutive or ten cumulative years between ages five and eighteen.

UCAT ANZ: four subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement. UNSW states the situational judgement mark is not considered. There is no Abstract Reasoning subtest in UCAT ANZ.

Offers: applicants are ranked within their scheme on academic rank, UCAT ANZ overall score, and interview score. Scores are not averaged. A high mark in one area will not compensate for a low mark in another. UNSW does not disclose the ranking algorithm and does not give interview feedback.

Indicative minimums on the same page (these are eligibility floors, not offer cut-offs): general Year 12 ATAR 96.00 without EAS adjustments and UCAT ANZ percentile 50 or above; REAP ATAR 91.00 and UCAT percentile 40 or above; Gateway ATAR 91.00 and UCAT percentile 50. Meeting a minimum does not mean an interview.

Indigenous Entry Scheme applicants apply via Nura Gili, do not sit UCAT ANZ, and have a separate process including the Pre-Medicine & Health Program. Do not assume the Kensington structured interview is their format.

What they actually assess

UNSW does not publish a station-by-station rubric, because there are no stations. The published language is a structured interview covering a wide range of relevant topics, with interviewers who have already read your MAP form.

That changes prep:

• Do not contradict your form. If you wrote about a particular experience, be able to talk about it without inflating it.
• Expect follow-up. Two people, one room, no reset. Vague motivation will be pulled.
• Australian context, not GMC. AHPRA's Good Medical Practice. Closing the Gap, Medicare, rural workforce, voluntary assisted dying as statute. UNSW has a substantial rural program; "I'll do a rural term" is thin if you cannot talk about who stays.
• No coaching theatre. UNSW's own FAQ says the university does not recommend commercial UCAT or interview courses, and that interviewers have indicated obviously coached applicants can be at a disadvantage in this style of interview. Read that as: do not perform a memorised speech. It is not a claim that speaking practice is useless.

How to prepare for this interview, specifically

Write less. Speak a long conversation with someone allowed to interrupt you and change topic. Have five reflections you can tell in ninety seconds and in four minutes: a time you changed your mind, a team failure, being out of your depth, delivering unwelcome information, a time the work was dull and you still showed up.

Why medicine structure still helps, but they can stay on it. Ethical reasoning still helps, but you will not be saved by a new room if the first answer was slogans.

After UCAT, the Sep to Dec timeline still applies. Confirm it is a panel. Do not run a full MMI circuit as your only mock.
