Auckland: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

The University of Auckland MMI for 2026 is not a live eight-minute conversation with an interviewer in the room. The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences page is explicit: all general MMIs in 2026 are online, on Kira Talent, in an asynchronous (video-recorded) model, and all applicants complete the MMI at the same time.

If you are drilling follow-up questions with a partner, you are practising a different exam. Auckland's current general MMI is you, a prompt, a camera, and a clock.

Format and date, from Auckland's page

• Tuesday 8 September 2026, 11.00am. All general MMI applicants at once. If you cannot participate, you are not considered further.
• Invitations were listed as due 26 August 2026 (the page says that date will be updated if it moves).
• Platform: Kira Talent. You accept Kira's terms. You get an individual link, expected the week before. Create the account before the day. Failure to register means you cannot sit.
• 8 stations. Each has one question/scenario and takes three and a half minutes.
• 7 stations are assessed: 30 seconds to read the stem and question(s), then 3 minutes to respond. Each assessed station covers one domain.
• 8th station: administrative, ID verification and Children's Act (2014) checks.
• Total MMI time is about 30 minutes.
• Computer or laptop with webcam and microphone. Not a phone. Not a tablet, on the key-information page. Webcam on for the duration. You must be alone, door closed. No notes, books, extra devices, or watches. Clear drink bottle allowed. Handwritten notes on paper are permitted during the 30-second preparation time (universal accommodation on the page).
• Two forms of ID; photo ID on camera or the MMI is not valid.
• Reasonable accommodation requests (beyond the listed universal ones) via the published form by 1 July 2026.

If you apply to more than one FMHS clinical programme (MBChB, BOptom, BPharm, BMedImag(Hons), MAud, MND), you sit one general MMI. The score is reused.

A separate live Zoom safety check interview is booked September to November under the Children's Act (2014). That is in addition to the MMI. The key-information page says the answers on the Children's Act form are not used in ranking, but only applicants who satisfy the safety requirements will be offered a place. We are not inventing a minute-count for that Zoom; the public pages do not publish one we will freeze.

Kira tracks suspicious activity. The integrity agreement forbids sharing stems, using AI or search, and getting help from another person or a second device. If misconduct is found, the page says the score may be reduced or marked zero.

MAPAS

Shortlisted MAPAS applicants sit the general MMI and a MAPAS Specialty Interview. The specialty interview is live on Zoom, not Kira. It covers academic preparation, cultural identity, whānau issues, MAPAS expectations and social consciousness. Interviewers include faculty, university staff, and invited community members. Two separate invitations. Both sessions are required.

What they actually assess

The general MMI assesses non-academic qualities. Auckland publishes the list on the same page. It includes oral English fluency, communication, resilience and adaptability, self-reflection and lifelong learning, contributing in groups, awareness of the health profession, commitment to healthcare, empathy, social responsibility, and a commitment to supporting safe, inclusive, and equitable access to health care for all people in Aotearoa New Zealand.

That last item is not optional colour. The page names Māori as tangata whenua, Pacific communities, LGBTQITakatāpui+ communities, people living with disabilities, refugees, people in material hardship, and others experiencing inequities. There are downloadable PDFs for the seven MMI domains and eight attributes. Read those PDFs. Do not substitute an Australian Closing the Gap paragraph with the nouns swapped.

This is a New Zealand interview. The professional frame is the Medical Council of New Zealand, not AHPRA, and not the UK GMC. MCNZ's Good medical practice and the Statement on cultural safety (2019, still in effect) are the documents. Te Tiriti o Waitangi is not a slogan to drop in the last ten seconds of a three-minute recording.

How MBChB ranks you after the MMI (2027 entry)

The 2027 FMHS programme limitations set interviewed General Admissions ranking for MBChB as:

• GPA 60%
• MMI 25% (a minimum threshold determined by the Dean)
• UCAT-ANZ 15%

First Year academic performance in that ranking uses the four common courses (BIOSCI 107, CHEM 110, MEDSCI 142, POPLHLTH 111). Graduate ranking uses qualifying-programme GPA. A minimum GPA of 6.0 applies for interview ranking in the published First Year and Graduate rules. Invitations can use interim grades with optimal placeholders for in-progress courses; final GPA must still clear the programme threshold or you drop out of selection. Other FMHS programmes that share the MMI (optometry, pharmacy, medical imaging) publish different GPA/MMI splits: this page is the MBChB interview, not a faculty average.

UCAT ANZ, where required, has four subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement. There is no Abstract Reasoning. Confirm on the current Dean's determination / admissions page which sections Auckland uses for your category. Do not guess from a forum.

Outcomes are expected late December. One FAQ page says MMI scores may be advised in October; the main page talks about collating scores after all MMIs. Use the live pages.

How to prepare for this MMI

Thirty seconds of reading and three minutes to camera is a different skill from Monash's two-plus-eight or a live actor station. You cannot wait for a follow-up that will never come. You have to finish.

Practise:

• Using reading time to name the domain and a position, not to draft a speech you will not finish.
• Speaking for three minutes without an interviewer nodding. Record yourself. The first time will be too short or too padded.
• Equity in Aotearoa in your own words, tied to a person, not a list of groups.
• Ethics as reasoning that fits three minutes. Cut the principle shopping list.
• Why medicine as one specific station, not a speech you paste into all seven.

Virtual versus in-person applies, with extra constraints: Kira, no phone, closed door, 11.00am sharp with the whole cohort. Test the platform when the link arrives. Book a library room if home is not private. What to wear still matters on camera, including a room check.

This is not a GEMSAS interview and not an Australian undergraduate circuit. If you are also sitting Otago, remember Otago's standard HSFY/Graduate path has no interview. Do not assume Auckland's date is a national NZ MMI day.
