Otago: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

Most people who get into Otago Medicine do not sit an interview. If you are an HSFY or Graduate category applicant, drilling MMI stations for Otago is the wrong exam.

The University of Otago's medicine professional-programme page is the source. Read it for your intake: Study Medicine at Otago. Cloudflare sometimes blocks automated fetches; open it yourself. Do not replace it with a coaching-site table.

HSFY and Graduate: no interview

For Health Sciences First Year and Graduate categories, Otago uses academic ranking after UCAT ANZ thresholds. The public guidelines describe UCAT as a gate: meet the cycle's thresholds, then selection is by academic score. There is no interview on that path.

The live page for 2027 MB ChB currently states UCAT minimums for general applicants as Verbal Reasoning at or above the lowest 20th percentile and Situational Judgement at or above the lowest 10th percentile. After those hurdles, UCAT scores are not given weight in further selection. Thresholds for other UCAT domains "may be applied at a later date", the page's words, not ours. If the live page moves a number, the page wins. We will not reprint a coaching-site table of last year's floors.

UCAT ANZ has four subtests: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, Situational Judgement. There is no Abstract Reasoning. Alternative-category applicants are not required to have a UCAT result; Otago says it will not be taken into account on that path. Applications for HSFY and Graduate: open 1 July 2026, close 13 August 2026 (always a Thursday at 11.59pm in the current pattern). Apply in eVision to 'Health Sciences Undergraduate Professional Programmes', then select Medicine. There is no allowance for late applications.

Alternative category: this is the interview

Alternative category is domestic, and it is a different process. It exists to attract academically suitable applicants with broad life experience, allied health professionals and other graduates who are not eligible for any other admission category. International applicants are not considered here.

Applications open 1 April and close 1 May. Apply directly to "Medicine Alternative" in eVision. Documentation must be in by 1pm, 5 May; late files are not considered.

Selection is two-stage:

1. Candidates are selected for interview on academic achievements, statement of interest, and CV. Not everyone is interviewed. 2. Those invited are asked for referee reports. You provide names and contact details of three referees (professional and character) up front; they are contacted only if you are selected for interview.

Interviews take place via Zoom approximately eight weeks from the closing date. Notification is via eVision. The Interview Panel will not reschedule. If 1 May is the close, eight weeks is roughly late June, treat that as arithmetic, not a published sitting date. The page's words are "approximately eight weeks from the closing date."

The final outcome of Alternative applications is confirmed by 11pm (New Zealand time), 31 August. The Medical Admissions Committee will not enter into correspondence about outcome or interview.

At interview, Otago lists topics:

• academic achievement
• other achievements
• commitment to a career change
• communication skills
• knowledge of the New Zealand health system
• understanding of the profession

That is a panel-shaped conversation, not an MMI circuit. MMI versus panel is the prep switch. Do not run eight Kira stations because Auckland does.

What they actually assess (Alternative only)

The listed topics are the assessment. This pathway is for people whose route is not HSFY or a standard graduate degree clock. "Commitment to a career change" is on the list because that is who the category is for. A rehearsed "why medicine" speech that ignores the career-change question will miss the published brief.

Knowledge of the New Zealand health system means New Zealand. Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Māori as tangata whenua, the Medical Council of New Zealand, cultural safety as self-reflection rather than a competence shopping list, district and primary-care realities, not AHPRA, not Medicare as the backbone, not Closing the Gap copied across the Tasman. You can know both systems if you are applying both sides; you cannot paste.

Communication is listed separately from achievements. They can already read the CV. The Zoom is whether you can talk about that CV without inflating it, and whether you understand the work.

After interview, those confirmed as suitable are ranked by the Medical Admissions Committee's overall assessment. Otago does not publish a 20/40/40-style split for this category on the page we used. We will not invent one. How MMI scoring works is a different exam.

Equity groups (Māori, NZRIPO, socioeconomic, refugee background, rural origins) sit on the same medicine page and have their own verification rules. They are not a second interview format. Do not treat "equity" as a secret MMI.

How to prepare if you are invited

You need a long conversation, not a circuit. Practise 20 to 30 minutes with someone who has read your statement and is allowed to interrupt. Have the CV in front of them. If a claim cannot survive "what did you actually do?", cut it from the statement before they have to cut it in the room.

Why medicine still helps, aimed at a career change rather than a Year 12 origin story. Ethics helps only as reasoning you can sustain, not as six mini-stations. Reading time is mostly irrelevant unless they share a stem; the published format is a panel on Zoom.

Virtual versus in-person still applies: private room, ID, stable link. Otago will not reschedule. What to wear is still neat clothes you can think in, not a costume.

If you are not Alternative, your Otago prep is academic. Interview reps belong to Auckland, Australian schools, or a later cycle, not to this offer.

Guidelines change. Otago's professional-programmes hub has already moved application windows in recent years.
