What to Expect on UCAT Test Day at a Pearson VUE Centre
Feeling nervous about UCAT test day? Here's everything you need to know about what to expect at a Pearson VUE centre — from check-in to score release — so you can walk in calm, prepared, and ready to perform.
What to Expect on UCAT Test Day at a Pearson VUE Centre
Test day nerves are completely normal — but the best antidote is knowing exactly what’s coming. Pearson VUE centres run a smooth, well-organised process, and once you know the routine, you can focus entirely on performing your best. Here’s a step-by-step walkthrough of everything that happens from the moment you arrive.
Arrive 15 Minutes Early
You should aim to arrive at your Pearson VUE centre at least 15 minutes before your scheduled test time. This isn’t just a suggestion — arriving late can mean forfeiting your test entirely, with no refund.
When you walk in, you’ll be greeted by reception staff who will check you in for your appointment. They’ll confirm your name, verify your booking, and guide you through the next steps. The centre will likely have a waiting area where you can sit quietly before being called through. Use this time to take a few deep breaths rather than cramming — your preparation is already done.
Photo ID Check
Before you’re admitted to the testing room, you’ll need to present valid photo identification. Acceptable forms of ID include:
- A current passport
- A current driver’s licence
- A government-issued national identity card
Your ID must be original (not a photocopy), current (not expired), and include both your photo and your full name exactly as it appears on your booking. If there’s a discrepancy — for example, a nickname versus your legal name — contact Pearson VUE in advance to resolve it. If you arrive without acceptable ID, you may not be permitted to sit the test, so double-check the night before.
Storing Your Belongings in a Locker
Personal belongings are not permitted in the testing room. The centre will provide you with a secure locker to store your bag, phone, keys, wallet, and any other items.
You cannot bring the following into the testing room:
- Mobile phones or any electronic devices
- Watches (including smartwatches)
- Food or drinks
- Notes, books, or study materials
- Bags or jackets (in most centres)
You will be provided with everything you need inside the room. Dress in comfortable layers if you’re concerned about temperature — testing rooms can sometimes be cool.
The Laminated Booklet and Marker
Instead of paper and pen, Pearson VUE provides a laminated booklet (or whiteboard) and a marker for your working-out. This is your scratch space for jotting down calculations, eliminating answer options, or working through abstract reasoning patterns.
A few tips for making the most of it:
- Write clearly but quickly. You don’t need to be neat — just legible enough for yourself.
- Use it actively. Don’t try to do everything in your head. Externalising your thinking reduces cognitive load.
- Erase between sections if needed. You can ask for a replacement booklet if yours fills up, though this is rarely necessary.
- Practise with a similar format beforehand. If you’ve only ever practised on paper, spend some time writing on a laminated surface so it doesn’t feel unfamiliar on the day.
The Test Interface — Flagging Questions and Navigating Sections
The UCAT is delivered through a purpose-built digital interface. Before your test begins, you’ll be given a short tutorial that walks you through how it works — pay attention to this even if you’ve practised with the official UCAT practice tests.
Key features of the interface include:
- Flagging questions. You can flag any question to return to it later within the same section. Use this strategically — if a question is taking too long, flag it, move on, and come back if time allows.
- Section navigation. You can move forwards and backwards within a section freely. Use the question navigator panel to jump directly to flagged or unanswered questions.
- Timer display. A countdown timer is visible throughout each section. Keep an eye on it, but don’t let it dominate your attention.
Remember: you cannot return to a previous section once time is up. Each section is locked when it ends.
One-Minute Breaks Between Sections
Between each UCAT subtest, you’ll have a one-minute optional break. This is a short but valuable window to reset mentally before the next section begins.
During the break you can:
- Sit quietly and take a few slow breaths
- Stretch your hands or roll your shoulders
- Mentally shift gears for the next subtest
You cannot leave the testing room during these breaks, use your phone, or access any materials. The break is purely a moment to decompress. When the minute is up, the next section will begin automatically — so don’t lose track of the timer.
No Negative Marking — Attempt Every Question
This is one of the most important things to remember on test day: the UCAT does not have negative marking. You will not lose points for an incorrect answer.
This means you should always attempt every question, even if you’re unsure. If you’re running out of time, make an educated guess rather than leaving questions blank. Eliminate obviously wrong options first to improve your odds, then commit to an answer.
Never leave a question unanswered. A guess has a chance of being right; a blank answer has none.
After You Finish — Score Release and Leaving the Centre
Once you’ve completed all sections of the UCAT, your scores will be displayed on screen immediately. You’ll see your scaled scores for each subtest as well as your overall total. Take a moment to note these down mentally — you won’t receive a printed copy at the centre.
Your official score report will be available in your UCAT account online shortly after the test. You can then use these scores when submitting your university applications through UCAS or the relevant admissions portal.
After viewing your scores, a staff member will escort you out of the testing room. Collect your belongings from your locker, and you’re done. Take a moment to acknowledge the effort you’ve put in — test day is a significant milestone.
