What ID Do You Need for the UCAT? (Don't Get Caught Out)
Turn up to your UCAT without the right ID and you won't be sitting the test — full stop. Here's exactly what ID you need, what happens if your name doesn't match, and how to make sure you're not caught out on test day.
You’ve spent months preparing for the UCAT. You’ve done the practice tests, worked through the question banks, and you know your Decision Making from your Situational Judgement. Then you show up to the test centre — and they won’t let you in.
Not because you’re late. Not because you forgot to book. Because your ID doesn’t match your registration name.
This happens every year. Don’t let it happen to you.
The UCAT ANZ ID Policy: What You Need to Know
The UCAT ANZ has a strict photo ID requirement. When you arrive at the Pearson VUE test centre, you must present one valid, government-issued photo ID — and the name on that ID must exactly match the name you used when you registered for the UCAT.
Exact match means exactly that. Not close. Not “close enough.” Exactly.
Accepted Forms of Photo ID
For UCAT ANZ candidates (Australia and New Zealand), the accepted primary photo IDs are:
- Passport (Australian, New Zealand, or international — must be current and valid)
- Australian driver’s licence or learner’s permit
- New Zealand driver’s licence
Your ID must be current and not expired. A passport that expired last year won’t cut it.
What Happens If Your Name Doesn’t Match
If the name on your ID doesn’t exactly match the name on your UCAT registration, you will be turned away from the test centre. There are no exceptions, no on-the-spot fixes, and no appeals process that will get you into that room on the day.
Here’s what that actually means:
- Your sitting fee is forfeited. The UCAT ANZ registration fee is non-refundable in this situation.
- You lose your preparation time. All those hours of study count for nothing if you can’t sit.
- Your med school application timeline takes a hit. UCAT scores are required by most Australian and New Zealand medical schools. Miss your sitting and you may be scrambling to find another available date — or worse, missing the application cycle entirely.
This is not a bureaucratic technicality. It’s a hard rule enforced at every Pearson VUE centre.
Secondary ID: Do You Need It?
In most cases, one valid primary photo ID is sufficient. However, Pearson VUE test centre staff may ask for a secondary form of ID in certain situations — for example, if there’s any uncertainty about your identity or if your primary ID is being scrutinised.
It’s worth bringing a secondary ID just in case. Good options include:
- Student card (university or school)
- Medicare card
- Bank card (with your name)
- Birth certificate
Your secondary ID doesn’t need to have a photo, but it should have your name on it — and again, that name should match your registration.
What to Do If You’ve Recently Changed Your Name
Name changes are one of the most common reasons candidates run into ID problems. If you’ve recently changed your name — through marriage, divorce, or a legal name change — here’s what you need to do:
Step 1: Update Your UCAT ANZ Registration Before the Deadline
Log into your UCAT ANZ account and update your registered name to match your current legal name as it appears on your ID. Do this as early as possible — there are deadlines for making changes to your registration, and you don’t want to be locked out of editing your details close to test day.
Step 2: Bring Legal Name-Change Documentation
If your ID is in your new name but your registration hasn’t been updated yet (or vice versa), bring supporting documentation to the test centre. This might include:
- Marriage certificate
- Change of name certificate
- Court order
That said, don’t rely on this as a backup plan. Sort out the name match before test day.
Step 3: Contact UCAT ANZ or Pearson VUE Support Early
If you’re unsure whether your name situation will cause a problem, contact UCAT ANZ support or Pearson VUE directly — and do it well before your test date. They can advise on your specific circumstances and confirm what documentation you’ll need. Leaving this until the week before is not a good idea.
Your Pre-Test Day Checklist
Run through this before you head to the test centre:
- Check your UCAT registration name — log in and confirm exactly how your name appears
- Check your photo ID — is the name an exact match? Is it current and not expired?
- Bring your primary photo ID — passport or driver’s licence
- Bring a secondary ID — student card, Medicare card, or bank card as backup
- If you’ve changed your name — confirm your registration is updated and bring supporting documents
- Know your test centre location and arrival time — Pearson VUE recommends arriving 30 minutes early
- Check the UCAT ANZ website for any last-minute policy updates — rules can change between cycles
