University of Sydney: interview format, dates, what they actually assess

If you are searching "University of Sydney medicine interview questions," stop and read the current admissions guide first. For standard domestic entry to the Metropolitan (Sydney) stream, Sydney currently does not interview.

That is not a rumour. The Doctor of Medicine Domestic Admissions Guide 2027 ranks standard applicants on admissions-test results (GAMSAT section scores, not overall or average) plus the other published criteria. Offers are made from that ranking. There is no standard MMI circuit for that stream.

Sydney's process has looked different in older cycles. Do not freeze a pre-2021 student blog. Read the guide dated for your intake.

Who does not sit an interview

Standard Metropolitan (Sydney) applicants who meet GPA and GAMSAT hurdles are ranked without an interview. For 2027 entry the guide requires a minimum GPA of 5 (7-point scale) as calculated by UAC's Qualifications Assessment Service by the published date, and a minimum of 50 in each GAMSAT section from an eligible sitting (September 2024, March 2025, September 2025, or March 2026). Overall GAMSAT and average GAMSAT are not used.

That is graduate-entry MD, not a Year 12 UCAT pathway. If you are a school leaver looking for a Sydney undergraduate interview, you are on the wrong page: this program is the four-year MD. Combined BA/MD and BSc/MD pathways for Indigenous applicants are described separately on Sydney's Indigenous student pathways pages and are not the standard MD process.

Who may sit an interview

Dubbo stream

The Dubbo stream sits under the Murray-Darling Medical Schools Network. Applicants must submit a personal statement on Sydney's template. They may be required to attend an interview to assess interest, intention, and aptitude for practising medicine in rural and regional areas.

Selection for that interview (except Indigenous Facilitated Entry) is based on admissions-test results and the personal statement. The interview contributes to the final ranking into the Dubbo stream. Offers for Dubbo are made in sequence commencing with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants and rural applicants with the highest rank, after satisfactory performance in the personal statement and interview.

If you tick Dubbo, write the statement as if a rural clinician will read it. "I like the country" is not an aptitude. Transfer between Metropolitan and Dubbo after enrolment is not permitted.

Indigenous Facilitated Entry Scheme

From 2027 entry onwards, the guide states the GAMSAT requirement is waived for applicants via this scheme. Eligible applicants may be required to attend an interview. Format and weighting are not fully specified in the public guide. Contact Indigenous Health / the Indigenous Admissions Advisory Group for the current cycle rather than borrowing a metropolitan MMI plan that does not exist.

Applicants with a postgraduate degree on this pathway may also be asked for a résumé. Assessment is individual.

Tie-breakers

Should applicants be ranked equally, the University reserves the right to use an additional selection tool, such as an interview or Situational Judgement Test (SJT). They will give due notice. That is a contingency, not a hidden standard interview for everyone.

Facilitated rural-origin entry (GPA floor 4.5, confirmation of rural origin on Sydney's form) is a ranking pathway. It is not, by itself, an interview.

What this changes about prep

Do not spend October running generic MMI circuits "just in case" as your only Sydney plan. For standard Metropolitan entry, the live exam is GAMSAT section performance and the administrative sequence (QAS within the designated window, online MD application, confirmation page). Interview drills will not move that rank.

If you are a Dubbo applicant, prep a rural-intent conversation and a statement that would survive a follow-up. MMI versus panel is closer than an eight-station actor circuit, unless Sydney tells you otherwise in the invite. Confirm format in writing when invited.

If you hold GEMSAS preferences at other schools, those interviews are separate. GEMSAS gives you one consortium interview; Sydney MD domestic applications are direct to the University, not through GEMSAS. You can sit both processes in the same year. Do not mix their rules.

Dates and process (2027 entry guide)

Exact day-by-day dates live in Sydney's admissions timeline, which they warn can change. The shape is:

• Apply for a UAC QAS statement in the designated 2026 window (a previous year's QAS is not valid).
• Submit the online MD application to Sydney by the published close.
• Eligible applicants complete an online confirmation page (this is not an offer).
• Offers follow ranking. Unconditional offers go to existing graduates with complete documents; conditional offers depend on finishing the degree by 1 January 2027 and hitting the required GPA.

We are not inventing a "Sydney MMI week" that the guide does not contain.

Combined Bachelor of Arts/MD and Bachelor of Science/MD Indigenous pathways are also described on Sydney's Indigenous student pathways pages: Indigenous applicants with an ATAR of 90 or higher may be invited to an assessment-day interview. That is a different course structure from the graduate MD. If that is your application, use those course pages, not this MD metropolitan summary.

If you still need interview practice this cycle

You might: Dubbo, Indigenous facilitated entry, a GEMSAS school, or a UCAT undergraduate interview elsewhere. Then practise the format you were actually invited to. After UCAT is the undergraduate calendar; graduate applicants should follow GEMSAS and Sydney's own timeline instead of a Year 12 ATAR clock.

AHPRA's Good Medical Practice still matters if you do sit a conversation. Closing the Gap, rural workforce, and Medicare access are live in a Dubbo interview in a way they are not in a GAMSAT section. Do not quote the GMC.
