UCAT Prep Timeline for Monash, UNSW, and Adelaide Applicants
Three medical schools, three different UCAT weightings, and one test window in July-August. Here's how to plan backwards from each.
UCAT Prep Timeline for Monash, UNSW, and Adelaide Applicants
A Year 12 student in Melbourne, a Year 12 in Sydney, and a Year 12 in Adelaide all sit the same UCAT in July. They get identical scores. Twelve weeks later, two of them are sitting interviews and one is staring at a rejection email. The difference isn’t ability. It’s that each university treats that UCAT score, the ATAR, and the SJT band in completely different ways, and the smart applicants built their prep timeline around the weighting that mattered for their target school.
If you’re applying to Monash, UNSW Sydney, or the University of Adelaide, your UCAT timeline isn’t just about the test date. It’s about backwards-planning from interview season, knowing which sub-score actually moves your rank, and accepting that what works for an Adelaide applicant can sink a UNSW one.
Why Monash, UNSW Sydney, and University of Adelaide weight UCAT differently
The UCAT Consortium publishes the test specs and runs the booking system, but it doesn’t decide how each medical school uses the score. That’s where applicants get blindsided. Across Monash, UNSW, and Adelaide, the same raw UCAT performance produces three different competitive positions.
- Monash uses UCAT alongside ATAR and a Casper-style situational test for non-academic attributes, with the cognitive sub-scores (VR, DM, QR) doing most of the heavy lifting at the interview-offer stage.
- UNSW Sydney runs a more transparent rank-based system where UCAT, ATAR, and a portfolio combine into a numerical rank, and the cognitive total often becomes the deciding factor when ATARs cluster at 99+.
- Adelaide gives meaningful weight to the SJT band, which sits at a band 1 to band 4 scoring scale rather than the 300 to 900 range of the cognitive sections.
So the same hour spent on SJT scenarios is worth more for an Adelaide applicant than a UNSW applicant. And the same point gained in Decision Making is worth more at Monash than at a school weighting ATAR heavier. Building a prep timeline without knowing this is how strong students burn 200 hours studying the wrong section.
Monash undergraduate pathway: backwards-planning from interview season
Monash interviews tend to land in late October through November for undergraduate medicine. Working backwards, that gives a Year 12 applicant a fairly rigid sequence.
- UCAT test window: July to early August
- UCAT score release: within a few weeks of sitting
- ATAR release: mid-December
The UCAT result is locked in months before final school results. Monash applicants who treat UCAT as a “do it after exams” task have already lost. The students sitting Monash interviews are the ones who:
- Started cognitive section drilling in February or March of Year 12
- Sat the UCAT in mid-July
- Then pivoted entirely to school exams and interview prep
A realistic Monash-focused timeline
February–April: Foundation
- One section per week
- Learn question types, no timer pressure
- Work through the UCAT Consortium’s official question bank on ucat.ac.uk
May–June: Volume and timing
- 1,500–2,000 timed questions across VR, DM, and QR
- Steady SJT exposure (e.g. 20–30 questions per week)
July: Sharpening phase
- Two full timed mocks per week
- Detailed error logs and review
- Save the official UCAT Consortium mocks for the final fortnight as realistic dress rehearsals
On r/UCAT, candidates who hit Monash interview rounds typically report 200–350 hours of prep across 5–6 months. The ones doing 600 hours in 8 weeks tend to plateau on Verbal Reasoning, which is the section that punishes panic the hardest at 44 questions in 21 minutes.
