UCAT 2026: What's New This Year?
The 2026 UCAT ANZ cycle brings key changes for Australian medical school applicants. Abstract Reasoning has been removed, leaving four sections. The test window runs 1 July–5 August 2026, with results used for 2027 university entry.

Why 2026 Is a Landmark Year for UCAT ANZ Applicants
If you’re preparing to sit the UCAT ANZ in 2026, you’re navigating one of the most significant shifts the test has seen in years. A major structural change — the removal of the Abstract Reasoning section — has reshaped the exam, and understanding exactly what’s changed (and what hasn’t) is essential for building an effective study plan.
This guide breaks down everything Australian medical school applicants need to know about the 2026 UCAT ANZ cycle.
Abstract Reasoning Has Been Removed
The biggest change to the UCAT ANZ took effect in 2025 and carries through to the 2026 cycle: Abstract Reasoning (AR) has been permanently removed from the test.
The UCAT ANZ now consists of four sections only:
- Verbal Reasoning (VR) — Assesses your ability to read and critically evaluate written information.
- Decision Making (DM) — Tests logical reasoning, statistical interpretation, and problem-solving.
- Quantitative Reasoning (QR) — Evaluates your ability to use numerical and mathematical information.
- Situational Judgement (SJ) — Measures your capacity to understand real-world situations and identify appropriate responses.
This is a meaningful change. Students who sat the UCAT in previous years — or who are using older study materials — should take note: there is no Abstract Reasoning section in 2026.
2026 Test Window: 1 July to 5 August 2026
The 2026 UCAT ANZ testing window opens on 1 July 2026 and closes on 5 August 2026. All candidates must sit the exam within this period.
Key reminders:
- Registration typically opens several months before the test window — check the official UCAT ANZ website for exact dates.
- Test centres fill up quickly, especially in major cities. Book your preferred date and location as early as possible.
- The exam is computer-based and delivered at Pearson VUE test centres across Australia and New Zealand.
Results Feed Into 2027 University Entry
Scores from the 2026 UCAT ANZ cycle will be used by universities as part of their 2027 entry admissions processes. This means your 2026 result is your ticket to medical, dental, and other health science programs commencing in 2027.
Each university uses UCAT scores differently — some weight it heavily alongside your ATAR, others use it as a threshold or interview selection tool. Make sure you understand how each of your target universities applies UCAT scores in their selection process.
Consortium Universities: Check for Updates
The UCAT ANZ is accepted by a consortium of Australian and New Zealand universities. While the core group of participating institutions has remained largely stable, consortium membership and entry requirements can change from year to year.
We strongly recommend checking the official UCAT ANZ consortium list directly for the most current information on:
- Which universities accept UCAT ANZ scores for 2027 entry
- Minimum score requirements or cut-offs (where published)
- How each institution weights UCAT in their selection criteria
Don’t rely solely on information from previous years — always verify with the official source and each university’s admissions page.
Using Older Study Materials? Here’s What to Do
If you’ve purchased prep books, question banks, or online courses from before 2025, you’ll likely find Abstract Reasoning content included. Here’s how to adapt:
- Skip all Abstract Reasoning content entirely. It will not appear on your 2026 exam.
- Prioritise the four remaining sections: Verbal Reasoning, Decision Making, Quantitative Reasoning, and Situational Judgement.
- Be aware that some older resources may also reflect outdated timing or question formats — cross-check with the official UCAT ANZ candidate guidelines.
- Seek out updated resources that reflect the current four-section format to ensure your practice is aligned with the real exam.
Studying irrelevant content wastes valuable preparation time. Focus your energy where it counts.
